Well – this is definately a welcome opportunity for those of us in the mobile community looking to execute on some mobile/GPS projects. Thank you Garmin.

Do you plan on opensourcing the browser plugin so that the growing Linux community can help get it working on our platform as well?

  5. Sabre23t commented on May 31, 2007 at 12:52 am

This certainly looks interesting. I’m especially interested in the MotionBasedWeb Services, Content Toolkit, and Garmin PeerPoint Messaging System. Will checkout this site further. :-)

Where can I find description of the binary format for Garmin POI’s ?
I want to add it to my site, as I have done with TomTom .ov2

  7. Roar Alte commented on May 31, 2007 at 9:52 am

Why base developement only on Windows system? Remember all the great programmers using Linux-based systems out there.

  8. developer.connect commented on May 31, 2007 at 2:11 pm

We are very focused on adding mac support right now. Unfortunately for us Linux users, there is currently no good business case on the table for supporting this platform.

  9. Aaron Linville commented on May 31, 2007 at 3:08 pm

I’m really looking forward to the Communicator plugin for Mac. I can’t wait to get started coding up apps for it. It’s good to see Garmin using modern tools like SVN and JDoc.

I tried to download the fleet management interface developer kit [FMI.zip] from link on the http://developer.garmin.com/lbs/fleet-management/ page, however, the file is blank! thanks.

  11. clarque commented on June 1, 2007 at 10:19 am

We fixed the broken link to download the fleet management interface developer kit. You should be good to go. Sorry about that.

  12. Jay commented on June 9, 2007 at 7:36 am

Just got into this. Cannot find prototype.js. A test version of yours appears to need it.
    Thanks!

How can I view the waypoints on googlearth

  14. moxie commented on July 2, 2007 at 5:27 pm

This is certainly a great development in the LBS area. GPS vendor opening up the walls will great help the location based development. Garmin is ahead of the game now. Wait to see what the others such as TomTom will do.

  15. Shashi Kumar KB commented on July 11, 2007 at 2:15 pm

What will be the LBS coverage on world wide basis. Well Garmin has its way not to bother what Tom and Dick do.

  16. Charles Curley commented on July 16, 2007 at 12:26 pm

The business case for Linux is very simple: you want developers, you go to Linux. Windows is loosing developer share, and Linux is gaining it. http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/07/02/mswindows-share_1.html

If you want GIS/GPS applications developers, go to Debian.

    How can I disable Fleet Management interface ? I tried 0xFFFF command (10 1A 02 FF FF 5F 10 03) from documentation, and it doesn’t work

  18. spr0k3t commented on June 21, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Looking for better Linux support. I can’t register my nuvi due to the windows/mac only plugin.

  19. Igor commented on June 24, 2008 at 11:05 am

Linux support should be great anyway! I use two Garmin devices: Nuvi 610 and GPSMAP 60CSx but still have to ask my friend to update the firmwares under windoze… :-( Well, published specs of firmware update stage could be enough at least for me.

  20. Bob Igo commented on July 10, 2008 at 6:42 pm

I’m looking for Linux support, too. I wanted to get map updates, but I can neither register nor use the Windows-only Firefox plugin from Linux. My 750 has an SD card reader. Can I do a map update with an SD card?

  21. TractorGeek commented on July 18, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Another vote for some degree of linux based support. Hearing that you guys released the source code for the nuvi 5000 absolutely drove my decision to purchase the device. I only assumed some basic sync/update tool would be available… I’ll eventually work something out, but simple out-of-the-box map update support would have been a nice gesture.

And for yet another compelling reason to offer linux support despite its less than stellar market share, let me ask you this: who exactly do your marketing folks think the “influencer” within your customer’s peer is when it comes to high end devices? That is, who are the people most like to influence a potential customer’s purchasing choices? When it comes to this most coveted form of advertising–word of mouth marketing–respected peers always matter…and there’s always that one guy who can be found on every floor of every office in every business park throughout the entirety of the corporate world… the one token, lovable, resident geek to whom most everyone defers for gadget, software, and electronic related advice and whose off handed comments around the water cooler can influence high end gadget purchases of those in the office for entire shopping seasons. And this is the guy…the one guy in fifty who’s using linux…and he’s a guy who holds more influence over customers buy decisions than you could ever hope to achieve.

  22. Megan commented on August 28, 2008 at 3:37 pm

I really want to buy a Garmin Nuvi, but I can’t fork over the cash for it when I know there is no linux support. I can’t imagine buying a GPS unit and not having the ability to upgrade the firmware. Just a .deb or even a nice tar would push me right over the line! Please, Garmin, I want you to have my money. Why won’t you take it?

  23. Michael commented on October 9, 2008 at 1:49 am

I would very much enjoy a Linux version of Garmin communicator firefox plugin. I really have to go out of my way to download geocaches from geocaching.com to my Legend HCx. If there are any fixes anyone knows about, it would be much appreciated.

  24. Kevin commented on November 1, 2008 at 1:31 pm

I am also a Linux user and would really like to see Garmin provide support for Linux users. Hopefully us posting here is the start of a good business case ;)

Same LINUX-request as posted already by Kevin & others here in this forum >> I am also a Linux user and would really like to see Garmin provide support for Linux users. Hopefully us posting here is the start of a good business case.

  26. deeaycee commented on December 4, 2008 at 7:00 pm

    Linux support wanted!

I haven’t used windoze for over 2 years.
    My friends use linux
    My parents use linux
    I’m your target buyer
I’m an American male, aged 30-40 yrs
I make a lot of money and spend a lot of money

  27. ljsilver commented on December 10, 2008 at 11:23 pm

Ubuntu linux user here. would like support for my 3 Garmin devices. I too have all or my family and friends with Garmins using linux.

  28. Axel commented on January 2, 2009 at 2:04 pm

To catch up with the Linux discussion:

I just acquired my second Garmin device (a Legend HCx) and was very disappointed finding that the communicator plugin only supports that stupid system from Redmond (no, Mac is no option, either. I need a real operating system – not a gameboy color…)

After all, firefox originates in the open-source community – and that means above all Linux. I am definitely not willing to shed stability and security for a bug-ridden obsolete proprietary system just to download data to my gps device.

So, please – open your eyes: Do Linux, forget Windoze – all those customers can’t be that wrong.

    Thanks.

  29. Luca commented on January 23, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Dear Garmin, I need Linux support too. I know swiss poeple have much money to spend, but i’ll NEVER give one $ more for a bad OS! And I think it’ll be the last time I spend money for a bad GPS that has no Linux support!

  30. bj commented on February 1, 2009 at 7:01 pm

Also would like Linux support for registration and map updates. Fortunately, I can still return the Nuvi 750 I got for Xmas.

  31. yimyom commented on February 14, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Once again, I am another Linux user and I’ve got a brand new Nuvi 760 that I cannot update or do anything with it. I don’t have windows nor a mac and I don’t want to turn my computer upside-down just to update one device. My ipod works like a charm with linux, my cellphone as well, why not my GPS ?
    Please, add support for Linux.

  32. Steve Patterson commented on February 19, 2009 at 10:14 pm

Another plea for Linux support. As to business case, consider Android and the “gphone.” Of course, by the time that becomes a compelling argument, it may well be too late…

  33. machiner commented on February 24, 2009 at 3:56 pm

No business case? AYKM? What time period are you Ostriches from? Please, pull your heads up.

Seriously, stop leeching from the opensource community and then turning your back on it with respect to support. It’s incredible the amount of companies that do this.

We Linux users have remained pretty quiet because we have understood that 5-10 years ago there really was no “business case” for developing for or supporting Linux. However, you guys really need to wake up.

These days my loot goes toward products that support my decision to use a real OS. My influence on my immediate community (friends, family, extended community)is strong.

My getting 100 or so people to support vendors and manufacturers that support Linux is one guy, but I’m not alone. There are many of us, mostly quiet, and we have a great deal of influence on our poor-ignorant-Windows using bretheren as soon as they see what we can do on our Linux boxes.

Pull your heads out of the sand. Maybe your CEO needs a refresher course in reality. lol, Windows has been a sinking ship for the last 7 years.

Rock on though, you guys can all come work for me when Garmin goes bankrupt because tom-tom or another competitor can see the writing on the wall.

    I pay pretty well. :)

  34. Andrew commented on February 24, 2009 at 4:56 pm

Happy with my nuvi GPS but a linux plugin for firefox would be really nice as I am unable to update the firmware.

  35. Jeff commented on April 11, 2009 at 9:48 pm

Yes, I want Linux support also. A Ubuntu user!!!

  36. Paul Guzowski commented on May 18, 2009 at 10:20 am

One more request for Linux support. I have a Streetpilot i3 which I am seriously considering upgrading. When I do, it will definitely be a device which can be used with Linux since I migrated away from Windows about 10 years ago.

Garmin states that there is no compelling business case for a Linux version of the Firefox plugin while they are “working hard” at MAC support. Ironically, starting with OS-X the MAC OS is Unix based. That means code which compiles for the MAC should compile fine on a Linux machine with the right compiler (e.g. C++). Garmin does not need to release the code to the open source community to do that as plenty of other companies release proprietary drivers, etc, into the Linux community.

No Linux support – No sale.

  38. Dasa M commented on June 5, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Please. Got Garmin Forerunner but need support for Linux (Ubuntu). Just open source and you will get terrific feedback, I’m sure. Most of Linux users do know a lot of staff and they like to play. Give them a toy and use their knowledge to help you to sell more of your toys ;-)

  39. peter l commented on June 27, 2009 at 5:12 am

OMG – no linux support? are you guys retards?
what kind of arrogant reply was that? “no good business case” – HA!

i guess i’ll just take my money elsewhere then…

  40. Andrew H commented on July 10, 2009 at 4:05 pm

I am another Linux-only user looking to upgrade my firmware from the website. I wish that I had I read this before purchasing my Nuvi. Please provide a Firefox plugin for Linux!!!

  41. john commented on July 25, 2009 at 7:53 pm

I’m a linux user who happens to be a teacher whose district is looking to purchase sets of GPS devices for our middle and high schools. (up to 200 to start). My district is also moving towards open source computing, so we’re looking for devices that will work with linux/unix based operating systems.

    There’s your business case. Hurry.

  43. Bill Davidson commented on August 25, 2009 at 11:42 am

Just another request for Linux support, particularly for Garmin Connect. I’d like to use my Garmin Edge 705 with Ubuntu/Firefox.

  44. Brutan Gaster commented on September 3, 2009 at 5:38 pm

I’m an Edge 305 user also wishing for linux support.

I previously had a forerunner, and I’m sure I’ll upgrade to an edge 705 (or it’s successor) at some point in time.

In the meantime, has anyone tried any Garmin software running under Wine?

I’ve been very happy with my Garmins and the product supper will purchase more Garmin products in the future.

  45. Markus commented on September 7, 2009 at 1:30 am

Why is there no Linux support?
I’ve bought a 775 and if it is not possible to handle the device with Linux I’ll give it back!

    Shame on you!
The world is more that you can see through a small window!

  46. Johan commented on September 18, 2009 at 3:21 pm

The thing that keeps me booting into windows instead of Ubuntu is using the firefox garmin plugin for downloading geocache waypoints and uploading training data from my Edge 305 to Sporttracks and funbeat.se
Please, fix the garmin firefox plugin for linux!

  47. Dennis commented on September 20, 2009 at 5:25 am

  48. Andy commented on October 2, 2009 at 3:31 am

Yet another request for Linux support please.

We would very much appreciate a port of the Firefox plugin that will run on linux.

My wife has just bought a nuvi 1310 and is incandescent that there is no way to register it other than on a Window$ PC or a Mac.

I run linux on all my machines.
My wife runs linux on her machines.
    Our son uses linux.

Even if you only put the source code out for it, someone in the open source community would gladly do the work.

  49. Dan-e commented on October 7, 2009 at 12:32 pm

To only reason Im still using windozer is to upload my forerunner 305 data to the garmin connect website. I also like to put in a request for linux support (especially for the browser plugin).

  50. Wilhelm Hagg commented on October 10, 2009 at 11:35 am

Just got a brand new 1350T along with the lifetime map support. Really nice device.

Do i really have to buy a Microsoft Operating System so that i can use the map update? I think we have a business case here since i still have the option to return the device.

Not sure whether i need a full software version that does everything. Just downloading the updated map and put it on the mass storage device is probably fine for me.

  51. Minelli commented on October 12, 2009 at 3:53 am

I’m online researching a replacement/upgrade for my eTrex Venture which has served me well for Geocaching. Seeing a thread like this is not encouraging me to stay with Garmin. All these people on here taking the time to comment and request for Linux, I’m a Linux user too. Glad I read through this page BEFORE making my decision to buy – there’s your business case, go figure!

  57. Calvin Jones commented on November 15, 2009 at 5:11 am

Adding my voice to the throng looking for Linux support. I ditched Windows Vista last year in favour of the stability and performance of Ubuntu and never looked back.

Just got a Nuvi 550 to use on the road and on a small motor boat (which means buying the marine charts too). Linux support would make life a lot easier for a lot of people.

And I’d second the “influencer” argument someone posted above… it’s about more than just numbers using linux… it’s about the broader influence they have with a large network of their peers.

And as the other poster pointed out, when it comes to tech gadgets, the person with all the influence is much more likely to be a linux user.

Okay… off to fire up my Windows VM and check for updates for my Nuvi. Painful, but necessary, at least for now!

  58. Robert commented on November 15, 2009 at 6:07 am

Another vote for linux. That would be really COOL.

  59. Doug Irvine commented on November 19, 2009 at 7:28 am

I only use Linux (Ubuntu) at home. Linux is a valid platform and really should be support. You will get far more back than you put in!
